Deployment of AI in healthcare depends on a genuine safety culture.In other words, the use of AI will be assessed not only through clinical safety lenses, but through regulatory, reputational, and ethical governance frameworks. Boards and executive teams will increasingly be accountable for AI system oversight in the same way they are for clinical risk.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already in Australian hospitals. But significant risks exist, including algorithmic bias, data drift, patient privacy and security concerns, lack of explainability, and unclear accountability when adverse outcomes occur. The question is whether Australian healthcare organisations have the governance frameworks required to manage these risks?
